The Paper Mario series has been beloved for most of its existence, and though many would argue that the original and Thousand Year Door - the two oldest games in the franchise - are also its best iterations, constant redesign and innovation has kept it feeling fresh even in its later instalments. Paper Mario: The Origami King was a surprising announcement from Nintendo, but a welcome one. For most of Paper Mario: The Origami King, players advance through the story at a reasonable pace, with more complex puzzle mechanics introduced gradually. The decision to have no EXP in Paper Mario: The Origami King was a bold one, but it works for almost all of the game's features - except one key element that suffers greatly from a lack of character improvement tied to something other than money or natural progression.
